I feel as if at the end of the chapter was the most important part when Bruno looked throught the window in his room, because he unknowingly saw the concentration camp and the Jews treated so poorly dressed in the striped pajamas.

"Bruno thought about this and frowned. He wasn't particulary bothered if Gretel was being sent away because she was a hopeless case and caused nothing but trouble for him. But it seemed a little unfair that they all had to go with her." (page 3)
-I thought this was interesting because the way he viewed his sister was truly intriging. By the way he described her, his choice of words inticed me. He viewed his sister as a "hopeless case".

  9. Discussion question chapter 3-4
    1. The relationship between Bruno and Gretel is bitter. They always fight and argue. Bruno is 9 years old. Gretel says he seems younger because he’s always wining and complaining like a little baby.
    2.
    3. Gretel and Bruno both see a bunch of people in these weird looking striped pajamas. They saw soldiers yelling at them and telling them what to do and where to go. When Bruno and Gretel saw what was outside Bruno’s window they were very confused on why there were people out there walking around, wearing weird clothing.
    4. The title from my fable read was called The Ant and the Grasshopper. The moral lesson of the fable was to always be prepared for something that you need later on.
    5. Foreshadowing – giving the reader a hint if what comes through the setting. I think an example of foreshadowing in this story would be when Gretel is nervous about seeing what’s outside Bruno’s window.

I could connect this to when my mom picked me up( I think in 2nd grade.) and she was crying and I was like whats wrong. Turned out we were moving. So I got home and a moving truck was there. I'm not sure if I had already knew because I don't remember. Actually I was kind of happy to be moving even thought Bruno didn't want to.
    Chapter 3 and 4 Questions

2.Bruno and Gretel can be considered one-sided because they don't change much during the story. Bruno is one-sided because he stays curious throughout the whole story. Gretel is one-sided because she stays the same because she still thinks Bruno is a little kid.
    3. The shocking discovery that Bruno and Gretel make is that they see a large fence that has people in striped pajamas on the other side. They were both suprised by what they found but Gretel rather not look over there while Bruno was curious and kept looking.

  12. 1.Bruno and Gretel do not have the greatest relationship. You can tell that Bruno is younger because he is always trying to find something to explore or mess around in. Gretel acts more like a teenager.

    2. You can see Bruno and Gretel as a one dimensional character because the story is being told by a narrator but then sometime they talk.

3.They looked out the window and saw the Concentration Camps.

    4. The boy who cried wolf is an example of a fable. From this fable I learned that if you keep lying about so many things than someone might not believe you.

    1. The relationship between Bruno and Gretel is a normal one. Gretel is the bossy one who gets everything she wants and Bruno is the annoying little brother. Gretel never wants Bruno in her room and Bruno feels as if her dolls eyes watch her when he gos in her room. Bruno is really 9 but everyone mistakes him for six because he has the body of a six year old.

2.They may be considered one-dimensional because they may not change or grow during the story. So far Bruno has stayed the same by wanting to leave and go back to Berlin.
What shocking discovery do Gretel and Bruno observe as they look out the window? What is the reaction of each character?

"...this time she wasn't looking at the flowers or the pavement or the bench with the plaque on it or the tall fence or the wooden telegraph poles or the barbed wire bales or the hard ground beyond them or the huts or the small buildings or the smoke stacks;instead she was looking at the people." Chapter 4 page 35

I found this interesting because of her change of focus. One second she wanted to know everything about their new place but then she saw the people and it changed. She then wanted to know who they were, why they were there, and what they were doing.

  16. 1. Bruno and Gretel's relationship is very interesting and hard to describe. Bruno is afraid of Gretel yet he doesnt want to admit to this he is in fact scared of her. Also Bruno describes Gretel as a "hopeless case" who causes nothing but trouble for him. Bruno is nine years old but he is very short for his age so most people think that he is younger.
    2. I think these characters might be one deminsional characters because not once has the author mentioned what Bruno or Gretel looked like or much about their personality in detail.
    3. The reaction of Bruno is he is confused and wonder why they are there, Gretel thinks that they are farmers.
    4. My fable read was "The Ghrasshopper and The Ant", which taught me to work and dont procastinate and do what i need to get done so that in rough times i will have what i need to.

    chapter 3

To paraphrase it, what happened in chapter three was Bruno was having flash backs about how Gretel's friends would make fun of him by saying he was six and not nine because of his lack of tallness.Later in the chapter he goes into Gretel's room and tells her about how bad the house is and how he hates it and the so called weird children he saw through his window, Gretel was curious about it because she didn't see any children around the place or the out-with. Gretel told Bruno that the out-with is the name of the house instead of calling it home because the people who lived there before were kicked out or out-with.When she saw through Bruno's window, she could say nothing, because her window on her side of the room had a completely different view. Bruno's however showed the children in the stripped pajamas in huts and working over a barbed wire fence.

  24. 1. Bruno and Gretel's relationship is seems kind of neutral. Bruno says that Gretel has been trouble since day one, but he is still scared of her. He does little things to annoy her, but he still respects her since Gretel is older than him. I thinks that Gretel feels that since Bruno is 3 years younger than her he doesn't know much. Bruno is 9 years old. He seems younger because he is childish and he likes to have a lot of fun.
    2. Bruno and Gretel could be considered one-dimensional because as they discover new things, they don't seem to learn anything new as the story goes on.
    3. What shocking discovery do Gretel and Bruno observe as they look out the window? What is the reaction of each character? Gretel and Bruno discover the things that go on on the land beyond their house. They see the barbed wire that surrounds their house, dirty looking people being bullied by soldiers, and having to do work. Gretel tries to come up with explanations for everything they saw. Later on she just sits on her own and continues to ponder. Bruno just continues to observe and tries to put things together.

I would connect Chapter 2 and the hatred Bruno has for his new home with my bestfriend Taryn Washington. I think this is a good connection because 2 years ago she had to move to Virginia because her dad is in the military. She didn't want to move away from all of her bestfriends just like Bruno, but she didn't have a choice. When she first got to Virginia for about a month she called me and told me that she hated it because it was boring. She has adjusted some, but she still doesn't like it much.

    3) What Bruno and Gretel found out of Bruno's window was a barbed wire fence as tall as their house with men, grandpas, and young boys behind it. All were wearing the same thing and soilderes were appearing to be yelling orders at them. Gretel tried to put logic to it by saying they were at the country-side. 34. 1. The relationship between Bruno and Gretel is not a very good one. He call her "The hopless case" because all she does is cause trouble. Bruno may seem younger because of how short he is, and Gretels girl friends tease him about that, calling him six instead of nine.

  37. Illuminator:Chapter 1
    - One of the most important moments is when Bruno came home from school, and Maria was packing up all of his family's things because they were moving from Berlin.
    - Another one of the most important moments is when Bruno's mother was telling him about the new house they were going to and Bruno's reaction to it.

    Summarizer:Chapter 2
When Bruno saw their new house, he was shocked because it was the exact opposite of their old house. He was shocked because it was nothing like their old house. The new house had three floors: a top floor where all the bedrooms were located and one bathroom, a ground floor with a kitchen, a dining room and the office were located, and a basement where the servants slept. There were no other streets around the new house, no one walking or running around somewhere, and most definitely no shops or fruit and vegetable stalls. Bruno felt like he was in the middle of nowhere. He also felt that he was stuck in a cold, nasty house with three quiet servants and a waiter who was both unhappy and angry. Bruno really didnt want to stay at the new house, but was told that he had to because of his father's job.

  42. 2.In a traditional fable, characters are usually one-sided. How might Bruno and Gretel be considered one-dimensional?
Bruno and Gretel can be considered one-dimensional because we don't really know much about their character. Like they can be considered as a flat character because we know little about them.
    3. Foreshadowing- a hint or clue of what is going to happen. When Bruno and Gretel were looking out the window, Gretel suspected that Bruno wanted to go over there and see what those children were doing by the way he was watching them.

    1. Bruno and Gretel seem kind of distant because in chapter 1 when Maria was packing Bruno's things he thought that he was being sent away. Then he thought that it wouldn't be such a bad thing because, to Bruno, Gretel is a hopeless case and it seems unfair that they all had to go with her. Bruno seems younger becuase Gretel said that he was kind of small for his age, and that the other nine year olds are bigger than him.
    2. At the beginning of the story, they move to Out-With, all Bruno is focused on is going back to Berlin. With Gretel, she is just to deal with it until it all blows over.
    3. When Gretel and Bruno look out that window, they see all of these people who are dressed the same, and live in these huts and everything. Gretel thinks at first that Out-With is a countryside, but then she says that country sides have animals and plants. Then Bruno sees that there are no plants and animals so it couldn't be a countryside.
    4. I read the lion and the mouse. The moral of that story was, even if you are big or small you can still help someone.
    5. Forshadowing is when you think something is going to happen before it happens. An example of forshadowing is on page 28 when Gretel was wondering who the other children were, Bruno said that they're out there.
